The Divine Elam and the allegory

to the Black American experience

Written by Lorraine Baron

Continuing to flip through, I see spells from justice magick. Roots. Her little note at the top: Spellwork must be justified. Then a passage from Exodus 21:24–25: “Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”

Flipping another page, I see the familiar words that been haunting me since the other night.

Sula, aka de re mo…

With a sad attempt, I channel my magic and make the six-point candles that are on my dresser light up. I’m getting better at that for sure. The energy from the flames feels as though it’s igniting my insides. Then I kneel on the floor, just like my mama did that night.

With closed eyes and bated breath, I silently pray those words.

Sula, aka de re mo…

Nothing.

Maybe I really do need a mentor.
